When considering the option of abortion, it’s vital to understand the types of abortion procedures fully and when they are typically done. The two types of abortion procedures are medical and surgical abortion. They each come with their unique risks to your health.

Safeguard your health by confirming your pregnancy details with a lab-quality pregnancy test and an ultrasound at Bloom Pregnancy Help Center. We’re here to inform you about abortion and the risks below.

Types of Abortion

Medical Abortion

There are two drugs used in the medical abortion process (also known as the abortion pill): Mifepristone and Misoprostol. Confirm how far along you are today with a free ultrasound at our center.

The first drug, mifepristone, works to block the progesterone hormone produced in a woman’s body during pregnancy. Blocking this hormone prevents the embryo from implanting or growing. The second drug, misoprostol, is the second medication taken during the abortion pill process. It causes the uterus to contract and release the embryo through the vagina.

A medical abortion procedure comes with serious physical risks. According to the Mayo Clinic, these potential risks include:

  • Incomplete abortion, which may need to be followed by surgical abortion
  • An ongoing unwanted pregnancy if the procedure doesn’t work
  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding
  • Infection
  • Fever
  • Digestive system discomfort

Surgical Abortion

Dilation & Evacuation (D&E) and Dilation & Curettage (D&C) are the two most common types of surgical abortion. They each work to dilate the cervix and use vacuum aspiration and surgical tools to remove the pregnancy from the uterus.

It’s important to understand the risks of surgical abortion before moving forward. Each type of surgical abortion uses similar processes of termination and comes with similar possible risks, including:

  • Perforation of the uterus (when a surgical instrument pokes a hole in the uterus)
  • Damage to the cervix
  • Scar tissue on the uterine wall
  • Infection
  • Excessive bleeding
