Abortion is a Medical Procedure

Abortion is the only option that ends a pregnancy, and since it’s a medical procedure, it comes with certain side effects and risks.

The two kinds of abortion are medical abortion and surgical abortion. Which procedure a woman has depends on several things, including how far along she is.

Medical abortion uses drugs to end a pregnancy, whereas surgical abortion can use drugs, surgical instruments, and/or suctioning.

Both cause abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding, but they have distinct risks you should be aware of. Although these risks are rare, you could still experience them.

Medical abortion-related risks are:

  • Fever
  • Digestive system discomfort
  • Infection
  • Heavy, prolonged bleeding
  • Incomplete abortion (which could require a surgical procedure)
  • An ongoing pregnancy (if the drugs don’t work)

Surgical abortion-related risks are:

  • Infection
  • Cervical damage
  • Scar tissue on the uterine wall (which can cause infertility and painful periods)
  • Perforation of the uterus (when a surgical instrument pokes a hole in the uterus)

How Can I Make an Informed Decision?

We know you likely have many worries about an unexpected pregnancy, which is why we’re here to help.

Bloom Pregnancy Help Center helps you confirm a pregnancy with an ultrasound. Offered after a positive pregnancy test at our center, this scan will verify your pregnancy’s:

  • Viability: Is your pregnancy developing normally, and does it have a heartbeat? As many as 26% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage, which may need treatment.
  • Gestational age: How far along are you? Your gestational age helps determine your options–medical abortion is FDA-approved only through 10 weeks gestation.
  • Location: Is your pregnancy located in the uterus? Some women experience an ectopic pregnancy, which isn’t viable and needs immediate treatment.

We’ll also discuss your options so you can learn about the risks and side effects of abortion and get your questions answered on adoption and parenting. We won’t pressure you to make a specific choice–this is your pregnancy.

We’re here for you. Make a free and confidential appointment today.
