Abortion is a Medical Procedure
Abortion is the only option that ends a pregnancy, and since it’s a medical procedure, it comes with certain side effects and risks.
The two kinds of abortion are medical abortion and surgical abortion. Which procedure a woman has depends on several things, including how far along she is.
Medical abortion uses drugs to end a pregnancy, whereas surgical abortion can use drugs, surgical instruments, and/or suctioning.
Both cause abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding, but they have distinct risks you should be aware of. Although these risks are rare, you could still experience them.
Medical abortion-related risks are:
- Fever
- Digestive system discomfort
- Infection
- Heavy, prolonged bleeding
- Incomplete abortion (which could require a surgical procedure)
- An ongoing pregnancy (if the drugs don’t work)
Surgical abortion-related risks are:
- Infection
- Cervical damage
- Scar tissue on the uterine wall (which can cause infertility and painful periods)
- Perforation of the uterus (when a surgical instrument pokes a hole in the uterus)
