Adoption is sometimes confusing. We want to clear up any misunderstandings about the process and ensure your questions are answered.

Modern adoption is not “giving up” a child. Instead, it allows you as the birth mother to shape a plan that fits your needs and preferences for your child’s future. Only you can make this decision, and we’ll talk you through each step.

What Is Adoption Like?

Adoption can be both a challenging and emotionally rewarding decision. Though it’s not an easy choice to make, it can provide stability for your child while aligning with your future goals.

The adoption process is unique for every woman. We’ll help you find the resources and support you need to determine whether this decision is right for you.

Types of Adoption Plans

There are three main adoption plans: open, semi-open, and closed. These plans can accommodate your present and future circumstances. Two plans allow you to stay in contact with your child and the adoptive family. You choose the plan that’s right for you.

Open Adoption

Open adoption is the most common type. It gives you the opportunity for a relationship with your child and the adoptive family.

With this type of adoption, the birth mother decides who will be the adoptive family. She can place her child with parents whom she selects through an adoption specialist.

Although an Open Adoption Contact Agreement is not legally enforceable in Texas, it does help the birth mother and adoptive family list the amount of contact they want.

Semi-Open Adoption

A semi-open adoption (also known as a mediated adoption) is similar to an open plan. You still have contact with the adoptive family, but all contact is sent through a third party, such as your adoption agency, lawyer, or other coordinator. It provides more privacy.

Closed Adoption

With a closed adoption, the birth mother remains completely anonymous. The adoptive family and birth mother have no contact with one another.

Though not as common, closed adoptions may be suitable for women who have safety concerns or desire complete privacy.
