If you’ve recently had a positive pregnancy test, it’s completely normal to feel uncertain about what comes next. You may have questions, and you deserve clear, honest answers about what’s happening in your body.
An ultrasound can help you better understand your pregnancy and provide the information you need as you consider your next steps.
At Bloom Pregnancy Help Center, we offer free and confidential ultrasounds in a supportive environment. An initial pregnancy testing appointment is required, and we’ll walk you through every step.
The Science Behind Ultrasound
A 2-D ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves, emitted through a small handheld device called a transducer, to produce images of the inside of your body.
Before the scan begins, a thin layer of gel is applied to your skin, which allows the sound waves to transmit smoothly from the transducer into the body. As those waves move through tissue, they reflect back as echoes and are converted into real-time images on a screen.
Depending on how early the pregnancy is, the transducer is placed on the abdomen or used transvaginally. Ultrasound does not use radiation and is considered a safe, non-invasive procedure.
What an Ultrasound Can Tell You
A pregnancy testing result confirms the presence of hCG, the hormone produced during pregnancy, but it cannot tell you everything you need to know. An ultrasound takes the next step by providing three critical details about your pregnancy.
First, it confirms the location of the pregnancy. A healthy pregnancy develops inside the uterus. When a pregnancy implants outside of it, typically in a fallopian tube, this is called an ectopic pregnancy. This condition cannot progress normally and requires prompt medical attention. Identifying the location early is important for your health and safety.
Second, an ultrasound helps determine how far along you are. It can estimate gestational age and provide a due date, giving you a clearer understanding of your timeline as you consider your next steps.
Third, it assesses viability, or whether the pregnancy appears to be developing as expected. Around six to seven weeks, a fetal heartbeat may be detected, which can offer helpful insight into how the pregnancy is progressing and may help identify signs of miscarriage or the need for follow-up care.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Your appointment is designed to give you clear answers in a calm and understanding setting. It typically begins with pregnancy testing to confirm your results. If your test is positive, an ultrasound may be performed to provide more information about your pregnancy.
During the ultrasound, you will have the opportunity to see what is happening and ask any questions along the way. Everything will be explained in a way that is easy to understand, so you can feel confident about the information you’re receiving.
At Bloom Pregnancy Help Center, we understand this may feel like a lot to process. You don’t have to have everything figured out before you come in. Our medical team is here to listen, support you, and give you the space to take things one step at a time.
